It is located near the center of Nashua, New Hampshire, just north of the Nashua River, about 3/4 mile west of the Merrimack River, and 1.1 miles east of Edward Everett Park.

The district is a roughly rectangular area of about 30 city blocks with an irregular shape. It generally encompasses the area bounded by Main Street on the south, Canal Street on the north, Library Court and Temple Street on the east, and Amherst and Spring Streets on the west. However, it also includes properties along some cross streets, such as Chestnut Street, Vine Street, and High Street. The district consists of various commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential buildings from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century.
